I am convinced that some political and social activities and pracities of the Catholic organizations are detrimental and even dangerous for the community as a whole, here and everywhere. I mention here only the fight against birth control at a time when overpopulation in various countries has become a serious threat to the health of people and a grave obstacle to any attempt to organize peace on this planet…(Blandshard 10)

Einstein’s attack on Catholics came at a pivotal time during the history of America. Catholics were rapidly seizing political power in many cities. WASPS favored birth control as a way to stop this “Catholic Takeover” and to degrade morals while also serving a form of sexual control.  Statements like Albert Einstein’s above, is how many Jews joined the Old Money Wasp Establishment in 20th Century America.

The Bennett Law was a highly controversial state law passed in Wisconsin in 1889, that required the use of English to teach major subjects in all public and private elementary and high schools. It affected the state’s many German-language private schools (and some Norwegian schools), and was bitterly resented by German-American communities. The German Catholics and Lutherans each operated large networks of parochial schools in the state. Because the language used in the classroom was German, the law meant that the teachers would have to be replaced with bilingual teachers.
The law seemed to be a non-controversial effort to require school attendance when it passed and few paid much attention to the language provision at first. In practice, the law was never enforced. Republican politicians had long avoided antagonizing the Germans. However, in 1888 the professionals were pushed aside and the party nominated William D. Hoard, a dairy farmer with no political experience as governor. He found the opposition of the Germans to the Bennett Law an insult to the English language, and he tried to mobilize the Wasp population of the state behind his reelection in 1890 by hammering at the necessity to have all children speak English. (Most German children were bilingual in the cities and towns, but those in rural areas spoke mostly German.)

Digby Baltzell

Digby Baltzell  (1915, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – 1996) was born to a very wealthy, Episcopalian family. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1940. Before entering the Ivy League, “Digby” attended St. Paul’s School, an Episcopalian boarding school in New Hampshire. After World War II service as a naval aviator, he earned his doctorate from Columbia University. He later became the eminent Penn sociologist credited with the invention of the acronym WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant). The term changed perceptions of American society and even American history, bringing forth new insight into the workings of the ruling elite of America.

Bacon

Ed Bacon (May 2, 1910 – October 14, 2005) was a noted American urban planner, architect, educator and author. During his tenure as the Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission from 1949 to 1970, his visions shaped today’s Philadelphia, the city in which he was born, to the extent that he is sometimes described as “The Father of Modern Philadelphia.” (Father of Actor Kevin Bacon)

The Production Code enumerated three general principles as follows:

No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin.
Correct standards of life, subject only to the requirements of drama and entertainment, shall be presented.

Law, natural or human, shall not be ridiculed, nor shall sympathy be created for its violation.

Specific restrictions were spelled out as particular applications of these principles:

Nakedness and suggestive dances were prohibited.
The ridicule of religion was forbidden, and ministers of religion were not to be represented as comic characters or villains.
The depiction of illegal drug use was forbidden, as well as the use of liquor, when not required by the plot or for proper characterization.
Methods of crime (e.g. safe-cracking, arson, smuggling) were not to be explicitly presented.
References to alleged sex perversion (such as homosexuality) and venereal disease were forbidden, as were depictions of childbirth.
The language section banned various words and phrases that were considered to be offensive.
Murder scenes had to be filmed in a way that would discourage imitations in real life, and brutal killings could not be shown in detail. Revenge in modern times was not to be justified.
The sanctity of marriage and the home had to be upheld. Pictures shall not imply that low forms of sex relationship are the accepted or common thing. Adultery and illicit sex, although recognized as sometimes necessary to the plot, could not be explicit or justified and were not supposed to be presented as an attractive option.
Portrayals of miscegenation (inter-racial marriage and procreation) were forbidden.
Scenes of passion were not to be introduced when not essential to the plot. Excessive and lustful kissing was to be avoided, along with any other treatment that might stimulate the lower and baser element.
The flag of the United States was to be treated respectfully, and the people and history of other nations were to be presented fairly.
The treatment of vulgarity, defined as “low, disgusting, unpleasant, though not necessarily evil, subjects” must be “subject to the dictates of good taste.” Capital punishment, “third-degree methods”, cruelty to children or animals, prostitution and surgical operations were to be handled with similar sensitivity.
